Head of School

THE OPPORTUNITY:

OJCS seeks a visionary leader who is both an accomplished educator and institution builder. The Head of School will be charged with upholding the highest standards in Jewish, French, and General Studies, while fostering a dynamic, inclusive learning environment. They will also play a central role in engaging the broader community and shaping the school’s future priorities and growth. This position requires a passionate and decisive leader with strong administrative, mentoring, and planning skills. The ideal candidate will embody the school’s values and effectively translate its mission into actionable strategies and impactful programming.

As a key figure in the Ottawa Jewish community, the Head of School will develop strong relationships with local institutions, serve as OJCS’s ambassador to the community and stakeholders, and work closely with the Board to guide long-term vision and strategy. The Head will also advocate for Jewish day school education and promote an environment that respects and welcomes students from all streams of Judaism, encouraging open dialogue, mutual respect, and inclusivity.

 

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will have the following attributes:

  • Deep understanding of and commitment to Jewish values, history, and practice.
  • Proven leader in education and organizational management within complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Strategic and tactical decision-maker with a respectful, assertive presence among staff, parents, and students.
  • Persuasive communicator able to articulate vision and values to diverse constituencies, including faculty, board, parents, and donors.
  • Business-minded with experience in developing and implementing a sustainable operational model.
  • Committed to academic excellence in both Judaic and secular studies; dedicated to teacher growth and performance.
  • Visionary thinker with a big-picture mindset and creative, results-oriented problem-solving skills.
  • Hebrew and French language skills are a plus.

Jewish Studies Teacher (Junior Division Grade 4-6)

The Ottawa Jewish Community School is an innovative and engaging Jewish Day School, Kindergarten through Grade 8, dedicated to developing minds, nurturing hearts, and instilling Jewish values. Located in Ottawa, Ontario, the Ottawa Jewish Community School is known for its rigorous academics, strong social-emotional curriculum, immersive Hebrew and French programs, and warm community. 

We are currently seeking a full-time, qualified, Junior Jewish Studies teacher (Grades 4-6) who is responsible for teaching the Judaic and Hebrew curricula, which includes Hebrew language instruction, Tanakh, Israel, Chagim and t’fillah. Duties include, but are not limited to, religious teaching and facilitation of daily prayer services, teaching Jewish rituals and traditions, providing instruction on and promoting Jewish beliefs, providing instruction on and facilitating religious engagement, providing instruction on how to read, translate, and make meaning of Bible and Jewish religious texts.

The candidate we hire will: 

  • Be fluent in Hebrew and well-versed in Judaic Studies; 
  • Develop, prepare, and implement lesson plans based on the curriculum; 
  • Collaborate with other faculty members and administrative staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods; 
  • Prepare lessons that reflect differentiation for individual student needs and implement the recommendations from assessments featured in Individual Education Plans; 
  • Be a positive role model for students, reflective of the mission of the school; 
  • Participate actively and meaningfully in Professional Development opportunities and be committed to professional growth; 
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students; 
  • Support student behavior guided by our school philosophy. 

Position: Full-time 

Salary Range: $49,357 – $103,361 per year; Commensurate with Education and Experience

Preferred Experience: 2+ Years Experience 

Required Degree/Credentials: Bachelor Degree and Bachelor of Education (or equivalent)

French Studies Teacher (Primary – Junior Division)

We are currently seeking a part-time (0.5) Primary-Junior French Studies teacher for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year.  The candidate we move forward with will:

  • Be fluent in French (oral and written communication) and be committed to providing an immersive classroom setting;
  • Develop, prepare, and implement lesson plans based on the curriculum;
  • Utilize best instructional practices, methods, materials and technology;
  • Collaborate with other faculty members and administrative staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods;
  • Prepare lessons that reflect differentiation for individual student needs and implement the recommendations from assessments featured in Individual Education Plans;
  • Be a positive role model for students reflective of the mission of the school;
  • Participate actively and meaningfully in Professional Development opportunities and be committed to professional growth;
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students;
  • Connect with and engage in student life
  • Support student behaviour in alignment with the school philosophy.

Position: Part-time 

Salary Range: $24,687 – $51,680 annually (based on 0.5 FTE); Commensurate with Education and Experience

Front Office Administrator (0.75 FTE, One-Year Contract)

We are seeking a dedicated and highly organized Front Office Administrator Assistant to join our team part-time. This key role supports the daily operations of the school by serving as a central point of contact for students, families, and faculty. The ideal candidate is warm, detail-oriented, and committed to fostering a safe, supportive, and efficient school environment.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support

  • Provide day-to-day support for students in the front office.
  • Administer basic first aid and manage student health needs in coordination with parents and school staff.
  • Maintain accurate student medical records, including allergies and medications.

Parent and Faculty Communication

  • Serve as the primary liaison for parent inquiries, ensuring timely and effective communication.
  • Provide administrative assistance to faculty as needed, regarding such things as schedules, procedures, supplies, and general information.
  • Relay important messages between parents, students, and teachers.

Administrative Operations

  • Monitor and record student attendance, including late arrivals and early dismissals.
  • Manage student forms for field trips, permissions, and special programs.
  • Provide logistical support to students (e.g., lunch accounts, daily schedules, supplies).
  • Maintain up-to-date emergency contact information for all students.
  • Assist with safety drills, emergency protocols, and student dismissal procedures.
  • Coordinate school deliveries, orders, and general purchasing needs.
  • Support food services and catering logistics as required.

Security and Safety

  • Support campus security with responsibilities related to school safety, including management of access control systems, two-way radios, and security camera monitoring.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a school or child-focused environment is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and remain composed in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in using administrative software and tools (e.g. Google Workspace, Microsoft 365).
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Proficiency in English is required; the ability to communicate in French and/or Hebrew is considered a strong asset.

This is a one-year, 0.75 FTE contract position, with the opportunity of extension. The role requires both independent initiative and a collaborative mindset. The successful candidate will play a vital part in maintaining the welcoming and well-functioning environment that defines our school community.

  • Have experience working with Primary, Junior and/or Intermediate Divisions;

  • Be punctual, energetic and motivated;
  • Up-to-date Police Record Check.
